Mysterious Marbles

Has anyone else (in York) noticed the recent appearance of a large number of (apparently) glass marbles being inset into the pavements? I've seen somewhere around 40 of them around town, in red, blue, white and colourless. As an example, there is one at each of the 4 "corners" of Lendal Bridge, where the pavement crosses over the river edge - one is just to the right of the door of Hartleys.

I don't like unexplained events.

Yeah, I was talking about them on Sunday night. Best bet is that they're something to do with Ascot. Do they light up at night or anything? Or maybe they might light up once Ascot starts?

Also some are raised like marbles, but there are a large number of flat ones too.

I've seen 'em too. My first thought was some crazy voyuristic fish-eye street camera... but that would be just silly. But I've got no rational explanation for the insertion of large balls of glass in the pavements either.

I've seen them and I don't like them.

I was thinking some sort of "services" marker code. Most (but not all) of them seem to be near something like a manhole, street light, drain, electrical cable, etc., so it could be some sort of indicator that one of these is nearby.

Although why this needs a physical identifier in the street, rather than someone to stick coloured pins into a map, I don't know.

I don't think they light up - certainly they weren't this evening. Not seen any flat ones - all the ones I've seen have the "fish-eye" look Sarum mentions.

Perhaps a letter to the council...

I checked tonight coming back from town, and they're more than at the corners of lendall bridge. They're every couple of meters down both sides of the road. Red ones at the "ends" (the junction with rougier street for example), blue ones in the center of the bridge, and 3 or 4 (I think) white ones in between. This doesn't go any way to explaining what they're actually FOR though. Maybe some crazy "street art" project?

You should get a street map, and mark on the locations of every one you can find, see if that shows anything up.

They're spreading too - there's one near the top end of Gillygate now, as well.

Sarum - with that last sentence, you show how little you know me...
