The Long-term Plans of Mice and Men

Had a modicum of good news today. I've been asking about having an extended holiday in the next 12 months or so - I want to have a bit of a break from work, go travelling, relax and just enjoy not needing to think and talk all the time.

Well, it's been provisionally approved. I'm likely to be off next January and February - haven't gone into too much detail over where yet, but I'd like to get in a week's skiing, visit my brother in Nantucket and one of my friends in Montreal, then spend at least a month in Australia. OK, I do appear to have gone into detail, I just hadn't realised it myself!

I'm down to one coffee today - I think if I take things slowly this time, no cold turkey, it'll be easier to manage. We shall see.

So Very Tired

Night In no. 2 in a (likely) continuing series.

I'm all meetinged out. 2 hrs yesterday, 3.5hrs today, 1.5 tomorrow, 3 Friday, 2 next Monday, 5 on Thursday - all about the same thing, and all where not a lot will be achieved.

I hate office politics. I just want to do some work.

I did get an offer today to defect to The Other Side - the Bile Beans have proposed a hostile takeover bid for what's in my head, with the promise of increased winnings at the quiz. Since we usually have about 1700 people in our team, there's often some dilution of the prize fund! They've only got 5 at most, and sometimes only 3 turn up. It sounded attractive. I've asked Lint (the team captain, on account of him bringing the pen) what he's prepared to offer me to make me stay ... nothing yet.

5 out of 8

Hmmm. I appear to have slightly miscalculated on when the year began in my earlier post on the quiz. We were actually only on 4 out of 6 then (4 out of 5 with my attendance). We're now on 5 out of 8, or 5 out of 6 with my attendance. We won the princely sum of £1.75 tonight!

I always knew there would be a use to watching the Young Ones, or being able to spell Comanche (in the face of extreme opposition I might add!), or knowing when Mr Blobby topped the charts. I do know rather too much useless shite!

In other news of the day, my actuarial debate went well. I'm sure this will be covered in far more detail on Lint's other site very soon. I had to argue the case for the insurance industry being able to retain the ability to use factors like gender and family history to charge different premiums to people, even though these factors are outside of the potential customer's control.

I don't think I stuttered and stammered too much, but I did forget about half my argument when I stood up (including bits I was relying on for later reinforcement!) And I limited the personal comments to entirely non-inflammatory ones. Although based on the initial straw poll, I managed to change one person's mind away from what I was arguing, and to confuse a further 4 people!
